Land-Use Integration
Integration
The purpose of integrating land-use planning with transport planning is to continue to meet future economic, social and environmental needs whilst reducing and minimizing transport demand.
The arrangement of land use and the associated locations of activities are major determinants of transport demand. An optimal land-use pattern will assist in minimising overall travel and transport demands.
Implementation techniques
Interactive ‘land use’ type models have an important and specialist niche role. However, whether or not an interactive land use model is used, it is important to test the effects of alternative land use patterns prior to developing transport ‘solutions.’
If after taking optimising land-use, transport investment is still required, then it is recommended that this investment is considered in terms of an investment hierarchy, see sustainable transport section, above.
